About ANA
The African Neonatal Association is a group of African neonatologists and pediatricians working in neonatal care in Africa.
We have over 253 members in almost every Sub-Saharan African country.
The association’s vision is one where the newborns of Africa receive the best possible start in life.
The mission of the Association will be to improve the knowledge, implementation and practice of newborn care in Africa; mindful of equity, access, ethics, family centredness and quality.
The ANA is a formally registered International NGO with its headquarters based in Kigali, Rwanda
Objectives:
Our current Executive Committee includes
Africa’s Newborns
Over a million babies die each year in Africa. With a neonatal mortality rate of 28/1000 an African baby is ten times more likely to die than some high income countries. Many babies die at home; uncounted.
The three biggest killers of newborns- prematurity, sepsis and Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (birth asphyxia) are all disproportionately common in Africa.
Despite this huge burden of disease, only 1% of global spending in health goes to Africa- and of that only a tiny proportion is allocated to newborn health.
The drugs, equipment and technology required to care for Africa’s newborns are relatively cheap and simple- the challenge lies in the logistics of implementing what we already know works. We need an urgent, co-ordinated and prioritised program to improve access to quality care across the continent.
The African Neonatal Association is excited to partner with local and international groups to be part of this critical mission.
