Africa’s Newborns

Over a million babies die each year in Africa. With a neonatal mortality rate of 28/1000 an African baby is ten times more likely to die than some high income countries. Many babies die at home; uncounted.

The three biggest killers of newborns- prematurity, sepsis and Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (birth asphyxia) are all disproportionately common in Africa.

Despite this huge burden of disease, only 1% of global spending in health goes to Africa- and of that only a tiny proportion is allocated to newborn health.
The drugs, equipment and technology required to care for Africa’s newborns are relatively cheap and simple- the challenge lies in the logistics of implementing what we already know works. We need an urgent, co-ordinated and prioritised program to improve access to quality care across the continent.

The African Neonatal Association is excited to partner with local and international groups to be part of this critical mission.

Dr Sonia Bandeira (Mozambique)

THE PORTUGESE LIAISON FOR ANA

Dr Sonia Bandeira is the Portuguese liaison member of the ANA. She works at the Maputo Central Hospital, Mozambique.
She has been both a Neonatologist and Pediatrician for over 18 years. Sonia is a newborn advocacy champion, taking action to raise awareness for premature babies and breast feeding through World Prematurity and World Breastfeeding days.

In Mozambique, she led the introduction of nasal CPAP in the two largest public hospitals. She teaches medical students in the Faculty of Medicine at Eduardo Mondlane University, and she participates in the training of residents in Pediatrics and Neonatology (Mozambique).
Since 2018, she has coordinated the activities in the first Mozambiquan Human Milk Bank. This has been with a focus on improving the survival of premature babies.

Her passion for newborn care can be summarized in the following words: “For all the things that mothers have lost, the worst by far is their babies; if each of us is focused on performing appropriate and effective tasks for the baby’s well-being, more babies will survive and grow up healthy. Then we will no longer be the region with the highest neonatal mortality rates in the world.”
